Light dark matter scattering in outer neutron star crusts
We calculate for the first time the phonon excitation rate in the outer crust
of a neutron star due to scattering from light dark matter (LDM) particles
gravitationally boosted into the star. We consider dark matter particles in the
sub-GeV mass range scattering off a periodic array of nuclei through an
effective scalar-vector interaction with nucleons. We find that LDM effects
cause a modification of the net number of phonons in the lattice as compared to
the standard thermal result. In addition, we estimate the contribution of LDM
to the ion-ion thermal conductivity in the outer crust and find that it can be
significantly enhanced at large densities. Our results imply that for
magnetized neutron stars the LDM-enhanced global conductivity in the outer
crust will tend to reduce the anisotropic heat conduction between perpendicular
and parallel directions to the magnetic field.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure
Diffusion of dark matter in a hot and dense nuclear environment
We calculate the mean free path in a hot and dense nuclear environment for a
fermionic dark matter particle candidate in the GeV mass range
interacting with nucleons via scalar and vector effective couplings. We focus
on the effects of density and temperature in the nuclear medium in order to
evaluate the importance of the final state blocking in the scattering process.
We discuss qualitatively possible implications for opacities in stellar nuclear
scenarios, where dark matter may be gravitationally accreted.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure
CCCTC-binding factor locks premature IgH germline transcription and restrains class switch recombination
In response to antigenic stimulation B cells undergo class switch recombination (CSR) at the immunoglobulin heavy chain (IgH) to replace the primary IgM/IgD isotypes by IgG, IgE, or IgA. CSR is initiated by activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID) through the deamination of cytosine residues at the switch (S) regions of IgH. B cell stimulation promotes germline transcription (GLT) of specific S regions, a necessary event prior to CSR because it facilitates AID access to S regions. Here, we show that CCCTC-binding factor (CTCF)-deficient mice are severely impaired in the generation of germinal center B cells and plasma cells after immunization in vivo, most likely due to impaired cell survival. Importantly, we find that CTCF-deficient B cells have an increased rate of CSR under various stimulation conditions in vitro. This effect is not secondary to altered cell proliferation or AID expression in CTCF-deficient cells. Instead, we find that CTCF-deficient B cells harbor an increased mutation frequency at switch regions, probably reflecting an increased accessibility of AID to IgH in the absence of CTCF. Moreover, CTCF deficiency triggers premature GLT of S regions in naïve B cells. Our results indicate that CTCF restricts CSR by enforcing GLT silencing and limiting AID access to IgH
Can ecosystem properties be fully translated into service values? an economic valuation of aquatic plant services
Ecological Applications 21. 5 (2011): 3083-3103 copyright by the Ecological Society of AmericaWe carried out an integrated analysis of ecosystem services in the Doñana social-ecological system (southwestern Spain), from the providers (different aquatic plant functional groups) to the beneficiaries (different stakeholders living in or visiting the area). We explored the ecosystem services supplied by aquatic plants by linking these services to different plant functional traits, identifying relevant ecosystem services and then working our way backward to ecosystem properties and the functional traits underpinning them. We started from 15 ecosystem services associated with aquatic systems (freshwater marshes, salt marshes, ponds on aeolian sheets, temporal coastal ponds, and estuaries) and related them to plant traits (directly or indirectly through intermediate ecosystem properties). We gathered information from the literature on the functional traits of 144 plants occurring in the aquatic ecosystems of Doñana. We analyzed the species×trait matrix with multivariate classification and ordination techniques and obtained seven functional groups with different potentials for delivering ecosystem services. A survey was then administered to 477 stakeholders to analyze, through the use of a contingent valuation exercise, how the ecosystem services provided by the different functional groups were valued. We identified connections between individual plant traits, ecosystem processes, and ecosystem services, but a mismatch appeared between the functional groups and the economic values placed on them by the beneficiaries. We found that contingent valuation applied to ecosystem services tended to ignore the ecosystem properties and biodiversity underpinning them. Our results cast doubts over the suitability of the economic valuation framework of ecosystem services to capture the full value of biodiversity and ecosystems to peopleThis research was partially supported by a grant from the Madrid Regional Government of Education, which was co-funded by the Social European Fund (F.S.E.), the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science (Project CGL2006- 14121/BOS), and the Spanish Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs through project 018/2009. Acumulación e transferencia de contaminantes emerxentes nunha cadea trofica
Traballo fin de mestrado (UDC.CIE). Acuicultura. This study tries to research the potential bioaccumulation and transfer of two emerging pollutants, bisphenol-A (a flame retardant) and triclosan (bactericide) through two components of the plankton, constituents of a trophic chain (microalga Tetraselmis suecica and rotifer Brachionus plicatilis). To do this, different parameters were analyzed: population growth and number of ovate females and eggs per milliliter. The results show a significant alteration of these parameters with respect to the controls, showing that triclosan affects to a greater degree than bisphenol-A, and that the exposure through the aquatic environment, produces a greater bioaccumulation of contaminant in the rotifer, than through food.[Resumo] Este estudo trata de investigar a potencial bioacumulación e transferencia de dous contaminantes emerxentes, bisfenol- A (un retardante de chama) e triclosán (unha sustancia bactericida) a través de dous compoñentes do plancto, constituíntes dunha cadea trófica (a microalga Tetraselmis suecica e o rotífero Brachionus plicatilis).
